Balance that Includes Opposites ...

Plain and Simple by
Sue Bender contains the following insights into the
Sunshine and Shadow quilt pattern: "It shows two sides -
the dark and light, spirit and form - and the challenge
of bringing the two into a larger unity. It's not
a choice between extremes: conformity or freedom,
discipline or imagination, acceptance or doubt, humility
or a raging ego. It's a balancing act that
includes opposites." It dawned on me how 'balance
that includes opposites' is an accurate description for
what's happened to me in the past month. All of us have
parts that we allow into the light and parts that we
keep in shadow. In this context, "light" and
"shadow" are not evaluations, but rather terms to
express what we share with others and what we keep
hidden.
Recently, I realized that there
are two aspects to my whole that I've kept in shadow
since launching Integrative InSight - aspects that have
served me well, and that many perceive as my
strengths: my MBA-side and my Yoga Therapy-side.
Much to my surprise, my MBA-side isn't solely about
numbers; it brings leadership, confidence,
professionalism, and commitment to in-depth study to my
whole. It is my Yoga Therapy-side that inspired me to
leave behind a successful, stressful career and reinvent
myself; it has allowed my calmness, ability to dig
deeper, whole-hearted listening and passion to support
others to fully blossom. In balancing these two
opposites and embracing the strengths they provide me, I
have finally found my unique blended expression of
'East-West'.
I just returned from
the 2nd International Symposium on Yoga Therapy And
Research, where over 800 people gathered for 4 days to
explore the vast Yoga Therapy spectrum. Many of you have
asked if I teach Yoga ... I now know my answer is: I teach Yoga
Therapy. By my definition, Yoga Therapy
facilitates "a personal experience with the powerful
body-mind connection, thereby providing you with a new,
reliable source of information that empowers you in
life." I don't teach in the traditional way ... I
facilitate opportunities for you to experience this
connection and then decide for yourself. Yoga
Therapy has also taught me that labels and techniques
aren't paramount as they are simply a means to the
experience. Thus I call what I do "Meditation"
because it is a term with which most people can
relate.
Many new options in April to experience
Yoga Therapy for yourself! Pay special note to "A
Taste of Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy" workshop, the
first-ever of its kind in Ventura County.
So as the days grow longer and there is more
sunlight around us, I hope this inspires you to welcome
your shadows into the light,
Sincerely,
Meenal

How to change the
world one word at a time ...
I
just had to share this opportunity because it is too
good to be missed!
Many of you know that
my husband and I practice Non-Violent Communication
(NVC), a means of expressing oneself that is essentially
a mindfulness meditation on communication. Marshall
Rosenberg, the founder of NVC, believes that
physical and verbal expresssions of violence are the
culmination of misunderstandings. He observed that by
changing how we express our emotions, thoughts and
needs, richer, deeper and more satisfying relationships
can be developed. NVC is being taught in regions of
historical conflict with powerful results. NVC has been
one of the most powerful, transformative, deceptively
simple and yet incredibly "hard to do because I forget"
tools that I have encountered, but I strive to use it
daily.
On April 5, Marshall will be giving a free
full-day lecture "Compassionate Communication: A
Language of the Heart" at the Santa Barbara City
College's Wake Center. Believe it or not, all you have to do is show
up. Pre-registration is not required, but
the hall gets packed, so plan to get there early.
We have attended twice and are going this year because
we are always inspired: 1) by Marshall's example of how
effortless this really can be; and 2) by the crowd of
people who attend because they believe in the power of
change.

You've
heard the buzz on Oprah
... join me to create some of our
own.
I read this book three times between December
2006 and April 2007 and am looking forward to reading it
again in 2008! Elizabeth Gilbert's raw honesty
encouraged me to ask myself the question 'Why do you
hold back? Why not just jump into life?'
Given the length of this book and the fact that
savoring is an
integral concept in this book, the frequency of this
discussion group will be a little different from
before. Join
me on the 1st Mondays of April, May and June from
7-8pm. Plan to read before our meetings and
we'll savor "Italy" in April, "India" in May and "Bali"
in June.
We will also meet in a new
location - the Mission House at the Camarillo United
Methodist Church, 291 Anacapa Drive, Camarillo, 93010.
Please RSVP by clicking on the link below.
This is a popular book and our meetings will be
publicized in the paper. An approximate headcount
will help determine whether we are standing-room only or
comfortably seated.
Price: Free.

Physically and
mentally relax into sleep.
If one of these statements describes
you, then you have insomnia:
- I get into bed , but it takes me forever to fall
asleep.
- I wake up in the middle of the night. I toss and
turn before falling asleep again.
- I find myself wide awake at 3 am and can't go back
to sleep.
- I sleep through the night, but I don't feel
rested.
Studies show that relaxation
techniques, in combination with life-style
modifications, are more effective than
sleeping pills in alleviating insomnia.
Join me for an interactive workshop where you
will learn simple techniques that can quiet your mind,
as well as physically relax your body, to help you sleep
better and longer.

Depth
of relaxation that's beyond your
dreams.
What is Thai Yoga Therapy?
- It is a 2-hour facilitated, one-on-one moving
meditation.
- It combines supported customized yoga stretches
(see photo to the left), breath focus, acupressure,
gentle twisting and energy work.
- It releases stress and tension, quiets the mind,
and improves well-being.
- It deepens the connection between mind, body and
spirit.
Absolutely no knowledge of either yoga
or meditation is required - simply relax and leave that
to me! I need to complete 60 2-hour sessions to
obtain my intermediate certification. To meet that
goal, I am offering these sessions at a special price of
$75 in exchange for a short feedback form. Recent feedback: "It
was comforting, relaxing and meditative. ... My mind
felt like it was freely drifting, while my body felt
safely supported at all times. The movements
effectively released muscle strains in [my] lower back,
shoulder and neck."Call now 805-504-6640
to experience it for yourself! Offer valid for
unlimited sessions until I complete my
certification. Read what Saul David
Raye, world renown Thai Yoga Therapy master and my
teacher, has to say about this
